FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Just days after Allen County commissioners took steps they said were necessary because of failures by the elected surveyor, the man who holds that office has submitted his resignation.

Jeff Sorg sent a letter to Allen County Republican Party Chairman Steve Shine on Monday morning indicating his intention to step down on Sept. 16.

Sorg was criticized for what the commissioners categorized as a massive backlog of important documents. They responded on Friday by appointing Mike Fruchey to a newly created position in hopes of addressing that concern.

Commissioners cannot remove an elected official from office, but Sorg’s resignation clears the way for the appointment of a new county surveyor.

Allen County GOP Chairman Steve Shine will accept declarations of candidacy in advance of a county-wide caucus of precinct committeemen and women to be held at 9 a.m. on July 30 at the Allen County GOP Headquarters.

The appointee will complete Sorg’s term, which runs through Dec. 31, 2024.

Sorg defeated Democrat Nicholas Nelson in the November 2020 election, The surveyor plays a key role in land development by reviewing drainage concerns, inspecting prospective development sites and performing other functions related to growth and development.
