FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - A neighbor helped pull a man to safety after a house fire early Thursday morning, witnesses say.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) says they were called to a duplex in the 400 block of West Baker Street just after midnight on Thursday on reports of a fire with people trapped inside.

When crews arrived, they saw smoke coming from the second floor of the duplex with one person unresponsive on the front porch. A 12-year-old boy who was in the lower level of the duplex says his mother pulled the victim, who was upstairs, to the porch as they waited for first responders to arrive.

FWFD says the man was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 12 minutes and searched for other victims but say no one else was inside.
