FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - A fire inside the walls of St. Joseph Hospital during demolition work Wednesday evening has caused collapse concerns, the Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) said.

Around 6 p.m., the FWFD was called to the structure for a fire that was in the walls, FWFD Public Information Officer Adam O’Connor said. O’Connor said the fire was started by the demolition contractors while they were doing work. The contractors tried using a machine they had to get to the fire, but it broke, so they had to call FWFD.

FWFD sprayed water inside the walls to extinguish the fire, O’Connor said.

A fence has been put up on Main Street between VanBuren Street and Broadway because of concerns about the building collapsing. The public is asked to stay away from the area until the street reopens. The City of Fort Wayne says the block will be closed until June 27th.
