FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - A buggy crash in rural Adams County left one child dead and three others in the hospital with serious injuries.

Police say it happened around 2 p.m. Friday on State Road 218 just east of County Road 100 East.

A preliminary investigation by the Adams County Sheriff’s Department shows that 24-year-old Aaron Nelson was traveling east on that road. Nelson told police that he was traveling five miles over the 55mph speed zone. He also told investigators he was looking down at his GPS and did not see the buggy which caused him to crash into it without breaking.

According to investigators, as a result of the impact, all four people in the buggy were ejected and landed along the side of the road, near a ditch.

Authorities say 30-year-old Elizabeth Schwartz and her three children, all under the age of 11, were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. On Saturday, investigators were notified of the death of one of the children.

This crash remains under investigation.
