Fremont man killed in Steuben County motorcycle crash

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - A Fremont man died late Tuesday night when the motorcycle he was riding crashed near Crooked Lake, Indiana State Police report said.

Tyler Channing Szapkiw, 28, was on a 2008 Harley Davidson in the area of the 2200 block of West Orland Road at the time of the wreck. Investigators believe the bike was traveling at a high rate of speed when it veered off the road at a turn and struck a utility pole, snapping it in two.

Szapkiw was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Arriving officers found him to be unconscious and suffering from a serious head injury.

Steuben County EMS personnel provided initial medical assistance, but Szapkiw died after being taken by air ambulance to a Fort Wayne hospital,
