FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - New video out of Ukraine calls attention to the nation’s animals and zoos, which have also come under attack from Russian shelling. Both zoo animals and zookeepers now live in a world of bombings, tanks, and explosions.
Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo director Rick Schuiteman says his gut reaction after seeing the video was that of helplessness until he realized the zoo right here in Fort Wayne could help.
Help will come in the form of a five thousand dollar donation to an emergency fund set up to support Ukrainian zoos. The funds can go towards food, medical supplies for the animals, or for supporting the keepers and teams that have to stay overnight at the zoos.
Schuiteman says a donation is the least the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo can do. He also encourages those who are able to make a donation to support the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, or to donate directly towards the fund to support Ukraine’s zoos.
