HUNTINGTON, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - A clogged septic line flooded a transitional home for women with contaminated water on Thursday, creating a big challenge for the nonprofit organization that runs the facility.

Place of Grace” is a residence for women who have served time for past offenses and are making their way back to a normal life. Seven women were living at the home when the problem developed and two more were expected to arrive within days.

The septic clog allowed tainted water to seep into flooring in several rooms and damaged the plumbing system, as well. The water pooled in the building’s basement.

Two volunteer pastors worked on Friday to remove saturated carpet and padding in a hallway and living room, but it is just the start of an extensive repair project.

“We prepare financially for minor repairs to the home, but are not budgeted for a large flooring and plumbing project such as this,” Place of Grace Executive Director Brittany Renkenberger said. “We will have to fundraise to cover the costs of these projects.”

There was no immediate indication of how expensive repairs would be.

The home opened about five years ago as a faith-based residential recovery program for women exiting incarceration and for short-term inpatient treatment programs serving the Huntington area. Maximum capacity is 10 residents, and women typically stay for six to 12 months, during which they receive support tailored to their individual needs.

Anyone wishing to help via donations or other means may contact the organization at (260) 358-7529 or huntingtonplaceofgrace@gmail.com.
