Souder: Cancer update includes ‘good news’
GRABILL, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Longtime northeast Indiana congressman Mark Souder is providing new insight into his fight against pancreatic cancer, now that doctors have performed surgery and scans that offer a better assessment of his condition.
Souder learned earlier this month about the cancer. In an update shared with friends on social media (and republished in part here, with his permission), he said: Initially it looked like it covered the vital blood vessels and surgery could kill me instantly. However, if it was just to the left of the essential blood system those centimeters could give more options... The good news is that the upper, mid-section and pelvic sections are cancer free - liver, stomach, kidneys etc. A key part of my surgery last week was putting in a shunt to help (among other things) protect the liver and kidney. They want to clear anything before tackling the pancreas.
Souder thanks those who have offered prayers of support since he disclosed his condition. The Grabill resident served 15 years in Congress, stepping down in 2010.
