FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - A man known for decades in The Fort for the business that bore his family’s name has passed away. Members of the staff at Fred Toenges Footwear and Pedorthics sent the following letter to customers:

Hello, It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Fred Toenges. We know that so many of you remember Fred and his passion to make every one of you comfortable. Fred was a remarkable man with a million stories and plenty of one liners that include; “Let’s compromise and do it Fred’s way.” “You hit one, you hit nine. You hit nine, you hit them all.” “I drive like my brother.” “NooooooOOOOOOOOooooooooo!” Please keep Fred’s family in your thoughts and prayers. We will be closing on the day of Fred’s funeral. Fred Toenges Footwear and Pedorthics Team

According to the company website, Mr. Toenges began working at the family shoe store when he was 14. He became a full-time employee in 1946, and his son bought the business in 2007. Fred Toenges said that the highlight of his career was being chosen by the Olympic Committee as one of 11 Certified Pedorthists to serve athletes from all nations at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. To our knowledge, an obituary has not yet been published. Fort Wayne’s NBC News extends condolences to the family, friends and employees who loved and appreciated Mr. Toenges.
