FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - Allen County has nearly doubled its previous record of new COVID-19 cases reported to the department of health, county data shows.

The department reported 1,244 new cases Wednesday, with 373 confirmed PCR cases and 871 probable antigen cases, bringing the total to 78,932 cases and 967 deaths. The second-highest amount of new cases was reported to the department on Dec. 31, with 651 cases.

Due to the shortage of rapid tests in the state, the Indiana State Department of Health adjusted its guidance for the tests. Now, rapid tests are reserved for anyone 18 and younger and symptomatic individuals ages 50 and older. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are available to anyone, regardless of age or symptoms.

In November, the Allen County Department of Health said local hospitals were seeing spikes in COVID-19 patients, leading health experts to urge residents to continue to take simple precautions like wearing a mask, social distancing, and avoiding crowded indoor areas.

Tune in tonight at 5 and 6 for reaction from local health leaders on the surge in cases.
