Community supports family a year after toddler death
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) - The community rallied around a local family Sunday in response to a toddler who died a year ago.
The group ‘Justice for Malakai’ hosted the event for Elias Paez. Last year the coroner found signs of abuse but did not rule on the manner of death.
No one has been charged in the toddlers death and organizers say they hope the event will show prosecutors they are not going away and expect justice in the case.
“That they see this and know that we’re expecting more from them and we want parents to know that it’s a reality. You can’t do these things and expect to walk away from it. Your children deserve better,” The groups administrator Katelyn Gustin said.
“I just think the point of it all is we want justice for whoever is responsible for whoever had any type hand in his abuse and you know ultimatly his death. Doesn’t matter who it is as long as the people who contributed are held responsible,” Elias’s aunt said.
The child’s father was briefly a person of interest in the case but he was never charged. The family is asking the community to keep raising awareness so the prosecutor reopens the case.
