Girls on the Run inspires girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. The group is gearing up for their annual 5K event.

The run is part of the group's 10-week program with girls in 3rd-8th grade. During the program, the girls develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. They would with trained coaches in dynamic discussions, activities and running games.

The program is concluding with a service project and celebratory 5K event. The 5K is happening at 5:30 Sunday at Indiana University Purdue University's main campus.

There will be a pre-race party for participants and running buddies starting at 4 pm. Participants and running buddies should meet at Alumni Plaza between Walb Union and Helmke Library for the run. Running buddies need to register at the Girls on the Run 5K website. Race day registration is $35.

Festivities at the 5K include a fun Mascot Dash, where more than 20 local sports and community mascots complete a hilariously competitive 50-yard dash. The event will also include a DJ, a “happy hair” station for temporary hair color and glitter, a photo booth, and a “bling your bib” station. Costumes, tutus and glitter are encouraged. The group said the race is not limited to women and runners will receive a race t-shirt.
