- 1932 - Hattie Caraway became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
- 1959 - Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records.
- 1971 - The groundbreaking situational comedy "All in the Family" premiered on CBS.
- 2010 - A massive 7.0 earthquake hit the Caribbean island of Haiti. It was the strongest quake to hit the region in 200 years and left more than 200,000 people dead and another 895,000 homeless.
